The Badger Unleashed comes face-to-face with -25c, 100-mile Ultramarathon in Mongolia.

The Badger Unleashed proved to be truly fearless recently as it was put through its paces by our Creative Pro Leo Francis (@leofrancisphotography). It started with a phone call from Leo asking if the Badger Unleashed had ever been tested at -30C! After doing some research and numerous lengthy conversations with our engineers we were confident that the Unleashed was up to the job and would power on through. We made a bespoke woolly hat for the Badger Unleashed and Leo was ready for action.

Leo was asked to go to Mongolia to Photograph the Rat Race Mongol 100 Challenge, the most surreal adventure challenge known to man. The objective is to traverse the entirety of the Khövsgöl Nuur lake from North to South, by any means: foot, skate or bike.

During this gruelling 4-day event held at the Khövsgöl Nuur frozen lake in Northern Mongolia, competitors must endure temperatures as low as -40 at night whilst sleeping in traditional Mongolian yurts. Leo met adventurer Peter Messervy-Gross, as he walked the 100 miles whilst wearing his four-year-old trusty brogues and his jeans because the airline had lost his luggage!

Temperatures dropped to a chilly -25C during the day but, as expected, the Badger Unleashed preforming perfectly. The Badger Unleashed is a small, lightweight, battery powered flash, with HSS and TTL packing a 250w punch! This allowed Leo to capture some fantastic images of Peter as he made his way across the frozen waters of lake Khövsgöl Nuur in Northern Mongolia.

During the challenge Peter was offered supplies from fellow competitors but, with size 13 feet, nobody had a spare pair of boots to fit him. Mr Messervy-Gross soldiered on not letting his blisters slow him down. He completed the 100-mile race within the 4 days and earnt the nick name “The Rogue in the Brogues”. He plans to keep his brogues in a glass case marked “break in case of emergencies”.

Leo Francis was impressed by the Unleashed’s flash quality, power and the versatility achieved from such a compact flash head. He would have struggled to use a larger flash head as space and weight within his kit bag was a real issue. We can’t wait to see what other adventures Leo takes the Badger Unleashed on in the future!
